The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) allows older workers to gain new skills and secure employment. As we celebrate National Employ Older Workers Week (NEOWW), we honor participants like Alma, who have achieved success with the support of SCSEP.

Alma came into the SCSEP program in August 2022 as a surviving spouse of a veteran, seeking work in customer service while managing the responsibilities of maintaining her home. Recognizing that she needed to improve her technical skills, Alma started the program in Job Club for four months. In July 2023, she began working as a navigator at Heartland Workforce Solutions, the area’s American Job Center.

Alma quickly became the welcoming face everyone would see upon entering the center. Through her role, she gained hands-on experience using technology, including checking clients into the center with a tablet computer. Alma also learned about the many services offered at the One Stop and worked closely with customers, helping those frustrated with their unemployment claims and guiding them through the system.

“Alma’s positive attitude and dedication stood out right from the start. said David, Alma’s supervisor. Her eagerness to learn and her warm presence made a big difference in our team and in everyone she interacted with. Alma is willing to assist anyone who walks in the door of the Omaha American Job Center.”

Reflecting on her journey, Alma shared, “The SCSEP program provided me with that education and training. SCSEP allowed me to get my certificate in customer service skills and improve my technical skills on the computer. I had Customer Service skills before in my prior work life, but I had been out of the workforce for a while and needed to polish my skills again. I knew that my age would be a challenge for me, and that I would need some assistance with employment placement.”

Alma’s warm demeanor did not go unnoticed.. Alma was referred to new job opportunity as a Community Engagement Specialist which aligned well with Alma’s skills. While she was hesitant to apply, she did it, and landed the job!

“I have found a position with Dynamic Workforce Solutions as a greeter. I could not have landed this position without the help of the SCSEP program. I am grateful for the opportunity SCSEP has given me to stay in the workforce and earn money again. I have a purpose to get up every day and feel productive and proud of what I have accomplished with my life skills,” Alma reflected.

As we celebrate NEOWW, Alma’s story highlights the transformative impact SCSEP has on older workers. National Able Network is proud to support individuals like Alma as they regain their independence and thrive in the workforce.
