Nelson Gonzalez traveled from Margarita, Venezuela through Peru to get to Mexico in hopes of entering the United States. “It’s the journey all immigrants are making right now,” said Nelson. Upon entering the United States it took about 5 months for Nelson to receive all his authorized documentation including his work visa. “As soon as everything was approved I started to look for work,” says Nelson, “When you come to the U.S., you come with a purpose which is to work because you have family to support.” At the age of 56, Nelson entered the U.S. job market with a wealth of career experience including a degree in policy and years of technical experience in electricity. However, his job search was challenging.
Nelson’s friend recommended he apply for a position that would allow him to use his technical skills in electricity. Although qualified and experienced, Nelson was not offered the position due to concerns regarding the language barrier, as Nelson was (and is) still learning English. As he continued to job search, Nelson was actually called back to the organization as they needed his skills to fix a specific machine – which he did quickly! This experience taught him that skills and experience transcends language. He says “You might think you need personnel that speak English, but you really should provide the opportunity because you could be in for a surprise!” So, Nelson moved onward and upward, he says, “If you fail at something, try it again. If you want to achieve something, think positive.” And just then, Nelson connected with National Able Network.
At National Able Network, Nelson was able to apply for and enroll in the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). Through this program, he was able to join the maintenance team at the American Job Center in Pilsen while he takes English classes and computer classes. He says, “I do not limit myself. I want to progress and keep learning. This has been marvelous for me. When I came to Able, I was very happy because it was (and is) for me a big help to pay for where I live, to eat, and to help my family. Everything is coming together. I feel happy. I am learning and nurturing myself for the future.”
