The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) empowers older workers with the skills and resources they need to overcome obstacles and re-enter the workforce successfully. As we celebrate National Employ Older Workers Week (NEOWW), we shine a light on stories of resilience and personal growth, like Cynthia’s.
Not long ago, Cynthia faced significant challenges, including homelessness and unemployment. After joining the National Able Network’s SCSEP program, her journey took a positive turn. Before enrolling in SCSEP, Cynthia struggled with workplace anxiety, which had held her back in previous jobs.
With support from her Career Coach, Kristi, Cynthia found a placement that matched her needs—a supportive and flexible environment. She began working at Golden Meadows as a Custodian, where the flexible schedule allowed her to focus on her strengths, such as her attention to detail and strong work ethic. The positive interactions with residents also boosted her confidence and enhanced her social skills.
Through SCSEP and National Able Network, Cynthia was able to further develop her professional skills. She gained access to a laptop and free courses in word processing and essential business skills, laying a solid foundation for success in today’s workplace.
Cynthia’s future plans include moving closer to her 13 grandchildren and extended family, a transition that once felt daunting but now seems within reach. With resume-building tools from National Able Network and the ongoing support of her Site Supervisor, who has already identified a promising job opportunity in her new town, Cynthia is excited about this next chapter.
“I look forward to this new chapter in my life and can’t wait to be closer to my grandchildren,” Cynthia shared.
